Content Management System (CMS). A browser based interface which allows the owner to update the content of their web site whenever they want. ecommerce Electronic commerce or e-commerce consists of the buying, selling, marketing, and servicing of products or services over the internet. Page Rank (PR) A PageRank results from a "ballot" among all the other pages on the World Wide Web about how important a page is. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page. Pay per click (PPC) This is an advertising technique used on websites, advertising networks, and search engines. Advertisers bid on "keywords" that they believe their target market (people they think would be interested in their offer) would type in the search bar when they are looking for their type of product or service. For example, if an advertiser sells red widgets, he/she would bid on the keyword "red widgets", hoping a user would type those words in the search bar, see their ad, click on it and buy. These ads are called "sponsored links" or "sponsored ads" and appear next to and sometimes above the natural or organic results on the page. The advertiser pays only when the user clicks on the ad. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) The term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimising a website, including the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process. Site Map A site map (or sitemap) is a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organised in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engines find pages on the site. SME Small and medium-sized enterprise: generally considered as a business with under 250 employees. Web Design The term web site design is usually associated with the designing of a web page, web site or web application. The design normally refers to the graphical make up (sometimes referred to as the General User Interface - GUI) of web development; this includes images, Flash multimedia, HTML and CSS. Web Development The term web site development is usually used to describe the development (Programming, Structure of the Mark-up) of a web page, web site or web application. The development is normally performed using a HTML editor (such as Dreamweaver) or Programming suite (such as Eclipse) in order to edit and manipulate the code to create a finished web page or database linked website. |
